~Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You~

Just recently I took a trip to NYC with some friends and went on a tour of the United Nations. Confusing enough, we were not in NYC anymore....or even The United States, we were on mutual territory. We were in a building were important decisions were being made about our Worlds future. It was very inspiring and made me think about 'The Big Picture'. I was no longer worried about what my hair looked like or what was on sale at The GAP. My eyes were open to bigger and more important issues, such as: the need for education, clean water, and peace & love across the globe. Learning about countries that don't have money to supply clean water; something that we in America take for grated. Going to school every morning is a privilege and I sometimes complain about it. We live is a place were people have rights and a voice and in other countries the people are scared to voice their opinions or even get on the city bus. To live is a place full of fear and death is something I can not even imagine. The UN helps so many people and places build schools and create a safer place to live, but there are still more to fix and more people to help. It is amazing how 100 some countries are working together to make this World that we share a better place. There was a beautiful mosaic that read ~Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You~ I grew up with this golden rule and I think that it is a very important one. Open Your Eyes and see your blessings and know that everyday there is someone that wishes they were You! *Enjoy*-Peace, Lizzy

Agreed, Liz. Though America shelters many who are still cold and hungry, the majority of Americans have more than other people of the world will ever have. It is easy to take for granted clean water, clothes, transportation and even school. How many of us are dreading the upcoming finals week? Yet none of us witness the thousands of Chinese students waiting in lines for hours for the chance to get a passport to come study in America (Daneshyar). I was so impressed with the United Nations that I am seriously reconsidering serving the Peace Corps. As Americans, citizens of the richest country of the world, we should consider what we have to offer. 'Maybe God has blessed us with everything we have so we can bless and give to others (Rob Bell).'

It's true that we dont stop and think about the important things in life. We are so into our own little worlds and the things we believe are important in our lives, which in reality aren't. Its kind of sad that people are so into fashion, the latest gossip, the TV, and so much more, rather that the true important things going on in our society/world. There are more issues going on around us rather than what we see/hear in our own town/college. It is important to look at the bigger picture and find what is truly important in the world rather than petty things. And also, I was taught growing up the same thing "Do unto others as you would want done unto you" and I believe it is important to keep this alive because without it our world could become even more negative. People need to have manners and respect others in everyway possible.

Thanks for the comment. I grew up with the golden rule as well and I plan on teaching that in my future classroom. It is really hard to get away from our lives and world we create for ourselves, but it can be done. It is hard and always will be but if we just keep our eyes open to the oppertunities to help others we can really help people and make a differenct.
